Sight-Reading Starter Guide

A simple, repeatable routine for reading new music with confidence. Written for beginners at the piano, though it works for any instrument.

2. The golden rules

3. Read by interval, not by letter name

Fluent readers rarely name every note. They anchor on a few landmark notes, then read the distance to the next one.

Step (a 2nd) Skip (a 3rd) Stacked 3rds (a chord)

4. A five-minute daily routine

Minute 1: Scan a short new piece using the checklist above.
Minutes 2 to 3: Clap or tap the rhythm while counting out loud.
Minutes 4 to 5: Play it slowly, hands separately if needed, without stopping.

Little and often wins. Five focused minutes a day will do far more than one long session a week.

5. Common traps to avoid
